Should you DIY your logo?

Should you DIY your logo? The short answer is no; you shouldn’t. In the world of Pinterest, Youtube, and other sites that help you DIY just about everything, it’s easy to see why some people would want to have a DIY logo. Programs like Canva that allow you to create your own logo make it simple to have a logo ready for your business in no time at all for an extremely cheap price. However, you do get what you pay for, and a cheap logo isn’t always a good one. Your logo is the foundation of your brand. If you’re building a house and don’t know how to pour a foundation, you probably won’t hop on Youtube, watch a couple of videos and pour it yourself. There’s too much risk involved. The same thing goes for your logo. DIY doesn’t always mean it’s better. You can use online programs to create your social media graphics, cover photos, and even flyers, but you don’t want to use online programs for your logo. Here’s why.

Although hiring a graphic designer can cost more than using an online program, don’t forget, you get what you pay for. When you hire a designer to create your logo, you will have someone who knows color theory, how to use different fonts to help you stand out, and how to capture people’s attention. Also, if you used Canva to create your logo, how many other people did too? Are you using the same logo? Same font? Same colors? Your logo won’t stand out if you look like everyone else. Also, online platforms will typically only give you the option to download your logo as a PNG or JPG file. While these files are okay to use for social media, the logo will lose its quality when you need to scale them to larger sizes for banners, posters, etc. PNG or JPG files use pixels to create images, whereas a graphic designer can create your logo in vector format. Vector files use mathematical formulas to create the images, so as your logo needs to become larger for different purposes, the image keeps its high resolution and won’t become blurry.

You need your logo to look professional and consistent with the rest of your brand’s image. A graphic designer can give you a full logo, then submark logos that can be used when your full logo can’t be used. Think about Google’s logo. You know the entire word Google is the logo, but when you see the “G,” you also associate that with Google. All of this can be a lot to design, especially when you don’t know what you’re doing. This leads to the next reason you don’t want to DIY your logo.

You don’t have the time! You’re running a business. You have customers to sell to, employees to manage, budgets to maintain, and a million other things you are trying to focus on. When it comes time for your taxes, you probably hire a CPA. Think of a graphic designer as your brand’s accountant. You don’t use them that often, but you get a lot accomplished and have a great result when you do. A graphic designer can also create other marketing materials like your website, banners, flyers, business cards, and other branded materials you might need. Also, you might have a good idea of what you want, but a graphic designer might be able to take your idea to the next level and produce something that you never thought of.
